PERSPECTIVE A — In Favour of a Ban
The growing presence of smartphones in schools has become a serious problem that educators can no longer ignore. Students are increasingly distracted during lessons, turning to their devices to browse social media or send messages rather than engaging with the material. Research from the London School of Economics found that banning phones in schools was associated with an improvement in student test scores, particularly among lower-achieving students who benefited most.
Beyond academics, smartphones contribute to social issues in schools. Cyberbullying, which is more difficult for teachers to detect than physical bullying, has increased alongside phone use. A phone-free environment allows students to develop face-to-face social skills and build genuine peer relationships.
Schools have a duty to create an environment conducive to learning. Just as students don't bring televisions to school, smartphones — devices designed to capture and hold attention — do not belong in classrooms.

PERSPECTIVE B — Against a Ban
While the concerns about smartphones in schools are understandable, an outright ban is not the right solution. Smartphones are not simply entertainment devices — they are powerful tools for learning. Students use them to access educational apps, digital textbooks, and real-time information. Banning them fails to prepare students for a world in which digital literacy is increasingly essential.
Furthermore, a ban ignores the reality that many families rely on smartphones for safety reasons. Parents want to be able to reach their children quickly in an emergency, and students value the ability to contact their families. Removing that connection creates unnecessary anxiety.
A more effective approach would be to teach students responsible phone use — how to recognize when a device is a distraction and when it is a tool. Schools that have implemented digital wellness programs report improved student focus without the need for a complete ban.
